About the Artist

This week’s artist is Nancy Young. She is graduating this year with a BFA in printmaking. She mentioned that she was a student when she was younger in 1984 but was kicked out of the university because of failing grades due to bipolar and addiction to certain substances. Now she has been really involved in her printmaking major by going to different classes or show around Southern California to make her work better. Nancy states that she isn’t in it for the money, she is in it so that her art will be there in the future, she already works as a programmer in Orange County.

Formal Analysis

Nancy chose the name “As the Crow Flies” for her exhibition because she traveled to different parts of Southern California for shows, workshops, and classes. In her work I saw several different textures of canvas, and also little pieces of sheet metal. There was a piece on the floor, it was a star made out of sand, it looked amazing, unfortunately someone did not notice it and stepped all over it. She mainly used dark colors like grey, white, and black. You could tell from her different pieces that she has lots of patience with her pieces.

Content Analysis

When we were talking with Nancy, she said that we must be willing to go out and try new experiences. She said, “There will be hardships throughout the lifetime but it will make you fly higher.” She achieved her goal of receiving an Art degree from CSULB. Nancy is grateful she was given another chance to finish her goal of acquiring an art degree.

Synthesis/ My Experience

My experience for this week was pretty rad. Nancy Young allowed us to touch some of the pieces that she passed around. Her work was so interesting because everything tied down to a bird’s point of view of streets. Overall I was not a huge fan of the Artist conversations this semester because I couldn’t really enjoy the pieces because I was too worried about writing down all the information.

Madison a.k.a. Maddy was born on October 28,1996, She is 19 years old moved from Northridge to a house in Long Beach with some roommates. Maddy didn’t have a top school but wanted a school far away from home where she didn’t have to live at home but can easily go visit. She is a 2nd year here in Cal State Long Beach, her major is Human Development with a minor in psychology. She is part of a Sorority and plays for the Volleyball Travel Club. She loves to blog, explore, and hang out with friends. Maddy enjoys Indie, Hip Hop, and Rap. Fun facts about her: She went to Coachella this year and said it was an amazing experience that she can’t explain unless you were there also she went to Kentucky but didn’t try KFC(Really Maddy? C’mon) When we asked her where she’d be in 7 years she said she would have already graduated college, got married, have a career that involves helping people for example Family marriage psychologist, and she will have a Golden Retriever named Luna. Maddy is definitely the coolest girl in this class, very outgoing and easy to talk to.
