About the Artist

Helen Cox is in the graduate program for her Masters in Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting Figurative at Cal State Long Beach. She was born in Ithaca, New York until the age of 18. She admits that she wasn’t a big fan of the East Coast because of the cold weather, so she decided to move to Southern California. Some of her hobbies are gardening and reading all sorts of books. In her garden she has California native plants, low water plants and fruit trees. Her favorite genre of books is mystery and fiction. When she first arrived to California she worked as a librarian for 14 years eventually becoming a teacher in California and Boston. She said she carries a book in which she can sketch any ideas that pop up so that she can get back to them later.

Formal Analysis

Helen Cox’s exhibit at the art gallery displays different pieces of carousels and animals that go with the carousels. Her art work was all different sizes from being large to small and being colorful to black and white. There was one piece in there that caught my eye which was the wooden sculpture she did of a horse on a carousel. Most of the faces on the horses had scared or frightened looks like something is chasing them. This tied into each piece differently but made the piece complete. All the pieces I was interested in were created by using pastel which had blue or an orange color to them. Overall, all her pieces had a common theme of a carousel.

Content Analysis

Helen told us that the world goes in circles, that is how she brings the carousels into her art. This reminded her of the constant circle our world is going through. In her work she wants to make the humans in the real world be her horses in her art work. This is by showing us that people are not calm but make mistakes in there life time. All the horses faces had this puzzled or frantic face because it is to show how humans look when there is chaos around. She also went to the Griffith park to look at the carousel there and at the Santa Monica pier. The owner at Griffith park introduced Helen to a lady that is a carousel animal collector. This person allowed her to stay and take sketches of the different carousel animals she could see. One of her pieces at the gallery was when she rode a carousel for four hours and drew a sketch when she was on it. Most of her pieces that are made out of pastel took a long time to make so she told us that she wasn’t going to do them again.

Synthesis/My Experience

Well like always I always go to the first Gallery that opens up first, only because it shows me that the artist is dedicated to show their work. first off I was amazed by the huge paintings. As i got closer I was even more amazed by the little details in the paintings themselves. It was beautiful. As a kid I was so into carousels because they were one of the few rides I would get on whenever I went to amusement parks because I was too scared of roller coasters. Helen seems to put a ton of effort to her work and i applaud her for that. Her work kept me entertained.

Wk 10-Artist conversation- Adeline Leon

This week I spoke to Adeline. I have never really talked to her but I’ve known because we took a Math summer course before starting college. She from Huntington Beach and commutes to school. She is a First year. She likes to go kayaking, sailing, canoeing, swimming, and loves to dance especially cumbias/Mexican music. Adeline likes going to the beach to see the sunset and loves food. She works a part time job, she started working since she was only 13 years old (the struggle). She doesnt like scary movies but watches them anyway. She said she likes cooking but not cleaning afterwards. She can listen to any type of music, it varies from rap/hip hop to corridos/cumbias. She is actually one of the few people that I know that enjoys driving. She admits to being a procrasinator and says it’s her biggest problem other than not knowing what she wants to major in. She has only traveled to Pachuca, Mexico where her family is from. Adeline is a random girl but hilarious because her snapchats stories are funny. You guys should get to know her.

About the Artist

Sean Joy Cabanig is a fifth year student in Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in the metals program here in Cal State Long Beach. She is from Los Angeles, California and has been living in Long Beach for most of her college life, two years dormed at Cal State Long Beach. She has two older siblings, both guys, the oldest is 31 and they other is 29. She has a boyfriend whom she likes cooking with, eating with and hanging out with, especially playing the video game Halo. At first she was into creative writing like poetry, then she attended SOAR and was introduced to studio art. She then picked up some interest in metals.

Formal Analysis

He art work was all metal. There was many interesting pieces with all sorts of shapes. The majority were smooth with curved edges. She didn’t add any color to the metals, if they were made with silver they were silver and if they were made with copper they we copper. She doesn’t have a specific size on her work, they actually varied. Most of here pieces were something that you could wear around your neck, wrist or even your fingers because they were jewelry. Except the penises.

Content Analysis

Almost all of the pieces of art she created was made out of the silver. But some were made from copper. She said the reason she uses silver is because it is precious and it is a metal that could be melted way easier. Sean describes that making a piece out of silver takes major focus. She mentioned that her work is very experimental which I had no idea what she meant by that. Lastly, she told us that she wants to go around the world and look at different cultures for inspiration that can help her create new pieces.

Synthesis/Formal Analysis

Well since she was the only artist at the art gallery I went to check out her work. Before speaking to her I went into her gallery and was amazed. He work was very beautiful and I enjoyed the name of the gallery the most “All Work, All Play”. I did feel a little awkward when I came across the penises. I didn’t understand why they were there but after that I went outside to hear about what she had to say. It was a great experience though.

Tyler graduated from Lakewood High School. Tyler likes to go snowboarding, going to the beach, and playing video games. Tyler’s favorite video games are Madden football games or any hockey video game. Tyler is big on sports, he supports the LA Kings, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Yankees. His favorite food is sushi. Tyler told me that he is enjoying this class so far and I notice he is very into it. He stated that he likes this class because he gets to see new stuff every week. In the end, Tyler was an interesting person to interview. You guys should check out his website.

Lord Disick

Lord Disick was born to an upper middle class Jewish couple. He always thought of himself to be worth more than others so he felt that he should become a lord. In order to become a Lord he had to marry one of the daughters of Lord K. That is exactly what he did but he was still just a simple peasant as he thought. In order to become Lord he gained Lord K’s trust, eventually poisoning his tea and leaving his father-in-law for death without any suspicion. The family agreed that he shall inherit the throne. Lord Disick’s first order was to get all peasants to bow for him and executed any who didn’t. He forgot all about his wife and the family that named him Lord. He would throw huge parties but only invited women. As time progressed he noticed that his brothers, who have also become Lords, were always looking down upon him in Moonrise Alpha. They would take Lord Disick’s women away and he does not tolerate that.

Wk 8-Art Experience-Automatic Drawing

Well this experience was super hard. First off it was difficult for my friend and I to actually touch knees while sitting criss cross. Then we couldn’t stop laughing. We felt a bit awkward being so close together and both of us being guys. Well when we finally got ourselves together we sat in the room with all the lights off. we drew with different markers switching them every 2 minutes.J4Dv8yKg.jpg We turned on the light to see what we drew and this is what we came out with. In my opinion this should go into a museum, just kidding its terrible.

Artist: Brianna Joy (AKA Bri Joy)
Exhibition: Merged
Media: Screen Printing
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East
Instagram: @bri.joy
Bri Joy shares her work at Cal State Long Beach. She is an undergraduate pursuing her BFA and is expected to graduate in 2016. She first attended Orange Coast College before she managed to transfer at CSULB in order to get her degree. She says that Long Beach has had a huge impact on her art because she was born in a small community. Although art takes up so much time in her life, she is interested in an many other activities like sports, yoga, or anything that involves “board”. She wants her work to be pure; her exhibit explores two important elements of her life which is the small town and big city.
Joy’s most important step for her work is print making. In her exhibit, she uses black and white. She says she uses style to challenge color. Even though is looks so simple, the black and white make it sleek. She uses organic art with many types of lines in order to show the meaning behind her work. She says that the process of screening prints can be difficult because it takes time and effort just to combine layers.
Joy’s pieces represent her life from living in the small town and moving to a big city. It represents her past and her present. Moving from a little town in a big city is such a drastic change, it allowed her to gain the desire behind all her work. Her experience causes her work to be more pure to her. In her work, you can see how she uses techniques and merges layers to show how she merged moving from a small town to a big city. It is truly amazing how Bri combines layers and makes one and show us how she takes her past and present and makes it into one.
Joy’s work really connects with me because I once I moved cities. Although it wasn’t such a drastic change, it still affected me. She is a great artist and at such a young age, she has a powerful exhibit that can connect to many of the students in Cal State Long Beach who made the same change as she did by moving into a larger city like Long Beach.

Wk 8-Classmate Conversation- Vanessa Betancourt

This week I held a conversation with Vanessa Betancourt. This girl is one of the funniest girl I’ve met because she is funny and sassy. Vanessa is an 18 year old who was born on July 3rd, 1997 in Long Beach, California but was raised in Bellflower, California. She graduated from Mayfair High School with the class of 2015. She attends Cal State Long Beach and is a Social Worker major. She spends a lot of time with her God sister Brooklyn and enjoys going to the gym, but she only goes on the stair-climber machine because she wants to reach her goal of becoming Slim thick. A little bit of fun facts: She drives a 1997 Acura but doesn’t know which kind, As a kid she loved Disney Channel and watched Lilo and Stitch, Disneyland is one of her favorite places ever, and her nickname is “Vanessa La Perra” which translates to “Vanessa the bitch” because she loves the new Dog filter on snapchat. She only agreed to take this picture, if I put the dog filter on her. She is an awesome person and has a great personality that will put everyone in a good mood.

Wk 7-experience-Video

This week we had to make a video of anything we wanted. We choose to do college problems and one of the main problems is students stressing out. We came up with the hashtag #Stopstressing2k16 only because my group loves to tell each other to stop stressing whenever someone is worried about an issue. I am not in the video because I was the one recording and the one that edited this video. I quickly came up with this scene as soon as we got out of class on Tuesday. I love film and love editing videos so this project was super fun. I would love to make a longer video about college problems.

Andrea was born and raised in Riverside, California . She said that Art and music has always been in her family and that is why she grew a huge interest in it. She was married  in her 20’s and her husband convinced her to choose painting and drawing as a career. Andrea was a badass girl growing up, she used to be the drummer in a band, she said she misses doing shows with her band. She is now a mother, she has quite a bit of pets that consist of dogs, pigs, and chickens. She is an undergraduate at California State University of Long Beach School of Art in Ceramics. She is expected to graduate in 2016. Her main ideas for art encompasses religiosity. Almost all of her work is pretty religious because she comes from a Christian background. She would describe her work as religious but with a little twist, textural, loose, and handmade.

Andrea’s artwork has a loose texture because is it made with just her hands. She uses paint, cement, and clay to create her pieces. All of her pieces have something in common, almost all have a grey background with a person in it. If you notice, none of her work is smoothed out because she  enjoys seeing the texture of her fingerprints in the clay. Her main focus has to be texture and gesture. The majority of her work has to do with some type of sacrifice. She also mentioned that each of her sculptures will take her about a week to complete.

Andrea Lauren William’s showcase was about Sacrifice, Religion and Motherhood. Most of the pieces show a nude women, looking up to heaven and being pregnant. I came to conclusion that these pieces tell us how a mother’s connection with her children will always be inseparable. Her art pieces show us that people sacrifice their body, mind, time and life. She referred to sacrifice when she gave birth to her child. She says that being a mother has changed her indefinitely. While creating her art pieces she says that different moments, reactions, choices and emotions cross her and that is what gives her ideas to create her unique ceramic pieces of sacrifice.

My experience was pretty cool this week. After checking out the many artists that were showcases their work, I was mostly awed by Andrea Lauren Williams. Not because there was women breasts but because it felt like I was in church. Her pieces were truly powerful. They showcased a Mother’s inseparable connection with her children. It made me think of my mom because her and I do not really have that good of a connection. I would love to see what other great pieces this amazing artist will create.
