Samuel Jernigan is a sculptor from Central California. He graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 2015 with a BFA. Now he showcase his creative pieces at CSULB at the Art Gallery. Jernigan works for the Farmers’ market where he is inspired by his experience. He said he noticed a set of abandoned toys, there he thought about getting the old toys and bringing them back to life by mixing them together. That is where his Victorian style art comes to be.

Most of Samuel Jernigan’s art pieces come from scraps of abandoned toys being made into one. He uses ceramics to to create his pieces, what is unique about his work is that they are interchangeable. For example, some of his work have parts that come off and are able to switch with other pieces. At first I was dumbfounded when I saw what looked like the shoulders of a women in a dress but the head was missing. Then i saw that he had taken it off to demonstrate how his pieces work.

Talking to Samuel was really inspirational. He was so excited when he saw how many of us crowded around him to ask him about his work. By hearing him describe his art, it was easy to understand why he creates what he creates. I would really love to see more of his art, and maybe have the opportunity to mix and match some pieces, that’d seem fun.

Overall, his art reminded me a lot of Dr.Suess’s creations which i truly enjoyed. I respect Samuel Jernigan for his humbleness, honesty, and his integrity.
